Regina Webster & Associates completed a study of bypass traffic on Shaeffer Road between Lake Cook Road and Illinois Route 53 for the Village of Long Grove, Illinois. The objective of the project was to determine the origin-destination nature of traffic traveling on Shaeffer Road by surveying the volume of traffic traveling north and south between Lake Cook Road and Illinois 53 and the turning movements of traffic on Shaeffer Road at Lake Cook Road, Checker Road, and Illinois 53. The study was performed by checking simultaneous traffic volume and turning movement counts at each location, and by tracking the network entry and exit of vehicles with a two-way radio. RWA field staff completed the turning movement counts using Jamar manual traffic counters.
By observing and recording the entering and departing traffic movements at key locations at each intersection, RWA determined the volume of non-local traffic using Shaeffer Road as a bypass route. The analysis indicated that only a small percentage of traffic used Shaeffer Road as a northbound bypass route, while no vehicles used Shaeffer Road as a southbound bypass route during the period of data collection.
